Louis Newbury-Smith has provided us with more archive footage of some of the world’s best ski racing. This time it’s the 1983 World Championships in Australia. Of course it was Danny Bertels (Belgium) and Liz Hobbs MBE (Great Britain) who won the worlds that year. Something they both did in the 1981 Worlds too.

Norm Griffin Update – 11 August

Update – 11 August by Louise

We’ve had another upset in the Griffin family with Mum (June Griffin) in the Sydney Adventist Hospital at Wahroonga after having major surgery last Tuesday.  She has definitely some bad days since the operation but seems to be improving by the day.  Visiting Hours at the hospital are anytime except between 1pm – 3pm.  For updates and more info you can contact either Lynette on 0407 452 097 or Louise on 0407 072 819.

Also a quick update on Dad – he is recovering well and is hoping to be back on the road driving again once he visits the specialist on Friday.  Mum being in hospital has probably set his recovery back a little but we are all busy trying to keep him on track and occupied.
Update – 8 July by Louise

Just a quick update on Dad……Yesterday he had a defribillator inserted and should be able to go home either tomorrow or Thursday. He is in good spirits and is looking forward to going home. He would like to thank everyone who has called, visited and sent their best wishes and Im sure he will be in contact if not in person but by phone over the next few weeks.

Our family would also like to thank everyone for their best wishes and support over the last couple of weeks as it was just as big a shock to us as it would have been to many of you.

Update – 1 July by Louise
I have just been to see dad this morning after he was in a bit of shock yesterday with the Dr telling him that he had had a massive heart attack and that he could drop dead at anytime. We all know how dad hates bad news so he went into a bit of shock and thought there was no hope.

After talking with the Dr this morning the next 4 – 8 weeks will be the most critical for him. He needs to do absolutely NOTHING!! over that period to give the heart time to heal. Abviously his heart will never be the same and the most he can expect is about 40%. Tomorrow they will run more test on his heart and from there they will know what sort of stress his heart can cope with.
He is expected home to remain in Westmead Hospital until at least the weekend with visitors more than welcome.

He is that he will be unable to make it to Foster on the weekend for the reunion and hopes you all have a great time.

Louise

=========================================

Shane Earl, Publicity Officer for Australia’s SRNSW has been contacted by the Family of Norm Griffin and asked to pass on the news that Norm suffered a heart attack last Friday and is recovering well in Westmead Hospital. Norm most recently has been the man on the mike at Region 5.

Fred Williams Racing Reunion

Bruce ‘The Roadrunner’ Robberds wants to let all NSW Australia Racers know that Fred Williams is organising a reunion of former and current boat and ski racers at Forster.

Fred Williams

Written in 1982 – When one talks of the history of water ski racing in Australia the name Fred Williams is constantly mentioned. Fred’s involvement for some 31 years has contributed to him being one of the best known personalities in the world of water skiing.

Bob Wing – up to 1982

The ‘Wing’ name is synonymous with water skiing all over the world and I couldn’t even begin to try and name the family’s accomplishments. However in 1982, Bob Wing wrote a great book called ‘Waterskiing in Australia’. Some time ago, Bob kindly gave me permission to reproduce articles from his book here on skirace.net. You can see a list of all that I’ve reproduced here.

Bob has done a lot more in the decades that have followed his book, but below is a 1982 article about Bob and his accomplishments at that stage, along with his own introduction to his book.

Thank you Bob.

Robbie Llewellyn

Water Skiing in Australia – 1934

In 1934, during the month of either July or August, Edward Arthur (Ted) Parker of 18 Schofield Avenue, Earlwood, became the first person in Australia to water ski. The epic event occurred in Hen and Chicken Bay, Sydney Harbour, behind a three pointed boat powered by a 22 horsepower Johnson outboard motor.

Terry Bennett – up to 1982 plus 2007 podcast interview

Commencing Trial Skiing in 1966, he teamed up with Peter Ward behind Wally Hackett’s “Thunderbolt” which was a leading ski team for many years. Terry’s greatest achievement was to set a World Endurance Record in 1970 when he skied 538.1 miles in12 hours, 15 minutes and thirty seconds.

Howie writes; I found this old photo from the early 90’s in Cairns. We were out on a fun run to Fitzroy Island (more)and Wayne was pulling off a series of monster jumps as we rounded Cape Grafton! ( this was not even one of the bigger ones!!) – Take note of the splash that marks the launch point!! (only seen in the full version of the photo)

But I thought it would qualify as a contender for the best “Bunny Hop” shots. – I used this shot as reference for the Tee Shirt for Wayne’s World Title Campaign in 1997.

Howie Hook designs for skirace.net

Back in 1999, Australia’s Howie Hook of H2O Graphics designed the skirace.net tshirts for the 1999 Worlds in Spain and I’ve used that design as a skirace.net logo ever since.

This week, Howie has designed and contributed a complete new banner for skirace.net (above) which incorporates the 1999 design and new artwork. The embeded photo will occasionally be changed but the shot that you currently see there has been contributed by Aussie photographer Rob Storum of In Tha Zone Images

My thanks to both Howie and Rob for their contribution to skirace.net.

Brendan Stout

On 13th Jan 2008, Brendan Stout wrote …Hi everyone,

This is Brendan. Today is the 12 January. Its been 7 weeks since my accident in the bridge to bridge. I am spending the weekend at home from the hospital, however I go back tonight. Last week I was transferred from Westmead Hospital to Royal Ryde Rehabilitation Centre where I will probably be for 6 – 8 weeks for further recovery. I am getting stronger everyday. My memory is improving and is almost back to normal. It will still take some time before further recovery as I have several severed nerves in my face and forehead which have affected my vision and facial movements. The doctors say it could be 4 – 6 months before they are fully regrown. I am also trying to put on weight as I lost 13 kilograms at Westmead which has made me quite weak and fatigued however I’ve started to put weight back on again and am getting stronger by the day. I would like to thank everybody for their support and get well wishes as I’m sure this has helped me recover already as far as I have. I just could not believe how many of these messages kept coming in from skiers and school mates and their families from all over the world. The time in hospital has been very tough but I was never on my own as usually mum was there or if not, dad was there sitting by my bedside when I woke up.

My Girlfriend Maddy Brien has spent many hours next to me in the hospital helping me to recover. I would just like to say a special thankyou to her. She’s been a great support to me and mum.

Hopefully in the coming months I will be able to spend time with my many ski racing and school friends as my life comes back together.

Thanks again everybody for all your support – It is a wonderful feeling to know I have so many friends in a time of need.

Brendan Stout

He has spent Christmas day at home with his family, and all going well will be able to be there a few more days before returning to rehab at Westmead where the hard work will begin.

Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas, and best wishes for 2008.
