British Water Ski Racing Mourns the Death of Guy Gooding
It is with great sadness that we hear of the sudden death of Guy Gooding aged 59yrs. Our deepest condolences go out to Wendy, Mum Gill, Kim & Sally & family at this very sad time. Guy Gooding and family were the backbone of ski racing during the early years. Guy along with his Mum & Dad , sister Kim were members of the Hunstanton Ski Club. In the early 70’s Guy was Junior Champion. When ski racing was at it’s strongest Guy was British Champion in 1976 competing against ski racing legends David Hutchinson, David Martin, Robin Mainwaring, Cliff Featherstone, Colin Harris, Gary Brooks , Bill Rixon, brothers Steve & Andy Coe. After hanging up his race ski Guy was still involved at Hunstanton Ski Club helping out at Club and National Racing. This year’s Southern 80 will see new and old ski racers travel to Echuca / Moama to ‘chew the fat’ of what would have been, could have been and what should of happened, some with an element of truth and lots of it with embellishment. This is the 50th year since water ski racing started on the Murray River in Echuca / Moama and it promises to be some exciting action on and off the water. Saturday morning in Hare Street Echuca will be a sea of people and boats, in the Total Tools Street Display. Hare street between Darling and Anstruther streets will be blocked off, so that people can get up close and personal with the boats and the teams. There will be merchandise on sale, jumping castle for the kids and an outside broadcast from Classic Rock. 50 years ago a water ski race was held on the Murray River called the Echuca Cup, over those 50 years that race has evolved into what we know today as the Southern 80 water ski race, the biggest Water Ski Race in the World. The 2015 Club Marine Southern 80 is to take place on the 6th, 7th & 8th February 2015 in the towns of Echuca and Moama. There have been 522 entries received for the event, which will see over 260 boats and over 900 competitors descend on the towns of Echuca & Moama. Along the competitors, thousands of spectators flock to the river to watch the Biggest Water Ski Race in the world. John Hoiles Passes Away
Many old timers will be saddened by the news that John Hoiles after a short illness passed away peacefully on the 6th January 2015. John was a true ambassador for ski racing in the early days John holds a very special place in the hearts of all within Water Ski Racing, as the Driving Force in the significant development of Racing as a Discipline of note within Water Skiing. He pretty much kick started the discipline at the higher level. He was of course the first World President of the discipline, and along with his enthusiastic colleagues at that time carved out a path for the future of Water Ski Racing at Domestic, European and World level, being much involved with the First World Championships being hosted here in GB at Whitstable, Allhallows and The Welsh Harp in 1979. In the 80’s John was also Chairman of BWSF Racing. John was a larger than life character and always a true enthusiast for the sport. He lived life to the full. Update on events at this year’s Diamond Race 2014
2014 Europe Cup series round 3, VIERSEL, Belgium, 29th June Round 3 of this years competition was the occasion for the 29th running of the famous Diamond race in VIERSEL, on the Albert canal outside Antwerp, and the usual exceptional weekend of action unfolded. There were a very healthy number of European skiers and teams, but we were delighted to welcome no less than 6 skiers from USA and Australia, who certainly enhanced the occasion, making a total of 70 skiers from 7 nations. This massive occasion, so expertly staged by the city of Zandhoven and the VIERSEL waterski club is a feature of every season of waterski racing because of the exciting location and unpredictable water conditions which are most testing. First race of the day was the Eurokids, for our two pre junior age group skiers of under 12 and under 15. There were 4 in each age category and the younger ones did two circuits of the 4km course with Ellen Rodens taking an excellent win in 12 minutes 13 seconds – the first home win of the day. The Diamond Race yet again proved to be a spectacular race in the European cup series. . Euro Kids started the days racing & for some their 1st Diamond race in challenging conditions they all took on the canal very impressively. A huge congratulations to these young ski racers. Men’s F1 & F2 was the highlight of the day with an outstanding win by Dave Vansteelant followed by Darren Kirkland & within seconds USA skier Todd Haig taking 3rd position. 50 years since the first ski race on the Murray River at Echuca
It is 50 years since the first running of a ski race on the Murray River in 2015. The original event has led to what we now know as the Southern 80. The 2015 Club Marine Southern 80 is to take in on February 6th, 7th & 8th. There are some exciting changes in place for next year’s event. Saturday’s racing will involve a tribute to the many legends of our sport of water ski racing and specifically the Southern 80 Ski Race. New Zealand to Host the World Water Ski Racing Championships again in 2015
New Zealand has been announced as the Country to Host the World Water Ski Racing Championships in 2015. The New Zealand Water Ski Racing Association is proud and very excited to announce that New Zealand will be the host country for the 2015 World Water Ski Racing Championships. Wellington will be the host city for next year’s champs that will be held from April 8th – 19th 2015. This is the second time that New Zealand has ever hosted the world titles after a very successful event was held in Rotorua and Taupo in 2007. The World Champs will bring together the worlds’ best ski racers to compete for 6 titles including Men’s Formula 1 and 2, Women’s Formula 1 and 2 and Junior (Under 17) Boys and Girls. Teams and their boats are expected from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Great Britain, France, Spain and USA. Skiers will create quite a spectacle and are expected to reach speeds in excess of 160KPH on the Wellington harbour courses based around Oriental and Evan’s Bays. Mildura Ski Club has announced some exciting changes to the annual GTS Freight Management Mildura 100 Ski Race held over the Easter weekend. Already carrying the title of the world’s fastest Ski race it’s now going to occur side by side. In what will be a spectacular change in format the expert classes on Sunday will all now start two at time from both the Mildura Ski Club site and Wicketts turn around point. Two Superclass teams will start every two minutes with the remaining expert class starting two away every minute. “Our competing teams have provided the drive for this change which will allow teams to further show their skills, and we also believe this will be a safer format” according to Mildura Ski Club President Geoff Thomson. The Saturday afternoon Dash for Cash and Presidents Dash event will now be increased with a total of 40 teams competing for starting positions in the main race Sunday, previously only the “Superclass” was seeded. “Starting position for the Sunday expert event is crucial so spectators should expect competitive times from these teams” Mr Thomson said. What a successful weekend we have had here in Echuca at the 2014 Club Marine Southern 80 Water Ski Race! Crowds flocked to the banks of the Murray River to watch the teams speed towards the finish line, hoping to get the place they were after and break any records they possibly could. A huge congratulations to team ‘Wild Thing’ on their outright win in a time of 32.57.33. Wild Thing is the first team to win the Southern 80 from a class other than Superclass since 1992. Andy Smith the driver, Peter Thompson (Observer) and the two skiers Jed Coey and Justin Cadden beat the winner of Superclass by 10 seconds – 99 Psycho Clowns towing Steve Berry and Michael Kelly. Police say crowds were very well behaved over the weekend, both down at the Finish Line and also along the banks of the Murray River between Torrumbarry and Echuca. A number of records were broken over the weekend, Ultra Trouble Maker broke the 6 Litre Expert record in a time of 33.57 towing Ray Ball and Joel Massey, with Scott Nind driving and Stuart Horne observing. It has finally arrived! The Club Marine Southern 80 Water Ski Race will be held in Echuca/Moama this weekend(Friday, Saturday, Sunday). Friday hits it off with The Coates Hire Breakfast With The Stars at the Kerrabee Soundshell in Moama, from 7am – 9am. This is the chance to get up close and personal with the boats, drivers, observers, and of course the skiers who are entered in this great race. Food and drinks will be available to purchase at the breakfast. Next up, is the scrutineering and briefing. This is where the teams get their boats and safety gear checked and are also briefed on the race for the weekend. Friday night consists of the American Hotel Launch Night, where sponsors and directors get together to launch the start of the 2014 Club Marine Southern 80. As we get closer and closer to the ‘Biggest Water Ski Race In The World’, teams are practising and getting organised for next weekends’ event, 7th, 8th & 9th February in Echuca. Be sure to keep and eye out for our competitors who raced at the World Championships in September last year at Tenerife, Spain. A number of current world champions will be racing in the Southern 80, including Jack Harrison, Ben Gulley and Rachel Stapleton. These skiers are the best in the world in their classes, making us proud! Other Australian’s who competed at the World’s will also be in Echuca for the 2014 Club Marine Southern 80. They include Jake Tegart, Aaron Sheath, Kelsey Feros, Tayla Wright, Jake Vanzetta (local skier), Ellen Jones, Mark Weaver, Codie Rigg, Dani Coyte and Vanessa Eyles. 2014 Club Marine Southern 80
The 2014 Club Marine Southern 80 will be held in two weeks’ time – 7th, 8th & 9th February. Teams are travelling from as far as Queensland, New Zealand, USA and Belgium to compete in the ‘World’s Biggest Water Ski Race,’ the annual event which draws around 50,000 people into the towns of Echuca/Moama. Saturday has the social classes, then Sunday morning’s racing starts with 200HP Outboard expert, where it will be a close call between Messy, Saintin and No Fear. Junior Boys with Pigs Arsenal and Warspeed battling it out for the win, whilst Rush and Triple 666 with be pushing it for the Junior Girls class. 70MPH and 60MPH – the predictions could be any of these teams, as long as they don’t break out! Teacher’s Pet and Pop & Me look to be the quickest in Sub Junior Boys, in Sub Junior Girls with only two entries, as long as they both finish they will be up on the podium! 2014 Club Marine Southern 80
It’s that time of year again where the towns of Echuca and Moama have their busiest weekend, with crowds flocking to the banks of the mighty Murray River to watch the 49th Annual Club Marine Southern 80 Water Ski Race, held February 7th, 8th and 9th. This year there are 595 entries over the weekend, with a total of 301 boats entered into the huge range of classes. Competitors are travelling to the event from 439 towns all over Australia, as well as a number of International competitors from New Zealand and Belgium, with over 1000 competitors competing over the weekend. The Southern 80 is known as ‘The Biggest Water Ski Race In The World’, with 126 bends throughout an 82km course. Any team racing consists of a boat, driver, observer and two skiers (expect disabled and tadpoles, where they only have one skier). The idea of the race is to get down the river in the quickest time possible, starting at Torrumbarry Weir and finishing at Victoria Park in Echuca. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve had the following conversation with ski racers: Ski racer: I need to improve my fitness? Me: How do you know that? Ski racer: Because I ran out of legs on the weekend. Me: Running out of legs often does not point to an issue with fitness. Ski racer: What do you mean? What else could it be? Me: Technique. What have you done in the way of work on yourself technically? Ski racer: Not much. Water ski racing – below the surface of appearances – is technical. Skiing technique is paramount. Why do some ski racers rarely, if ever, fall? Largely because of their technique. Why do some ski racers seem to last even though they don’t appear fit? Because of their technique. Golfers and tennis players at the top of their sport continue to work on their technique daily. The top 5% of ski racers (strong in all conditions) have done more technical training than the other 95% of ski racers combined. Hellrazor takes out 2013 Barrie Beehag Ski Race
A successful weekend was had by all competitors, spectators and also the directors at the 2013 Barrie Beehag Water Ski Race over the weekend. Congratulations to all teams who finished the race from Deep Creek Marina to Torrumbarry Weir and back on Saturday 16th November. There were a number of records broken this year, in Superclass, Mark Cranny driving Hellrazor broke the record and won outright with a time of 21.43. Elm Street came second with a time of 22.53 and Superman came third, also breaking the record, finishing with a time of 23.23. Wild Thing were the winners of Unlimited, in a time of 23.44, Super Slak won 8 Litre Inboard – a local boat and team from Echuca. Evinrude Ace Racing won and broke their previous record in MOC, with Smokin Mirrors 2 not far behind them. More Mojo won 6 Litre Inboard and Sonic Boats won and broke the record for SMOC – a time of 28.52. The engine class 200hp had 5 entries, with the first 4 boats all breaking the record. 7th November 2013 Only one week until The Annual Barrie Beehag Water Ski Race will be held for its 8th year! Racing will commence from Deep Creek Marina in Moama, racing to Torrumbarry Weir and back again to the Marina for the Finish line. 3rd November 2013 The Barrie Beehag Water Ski Race is coming up again fast! Competitors will race from Deep Creek Marina to Torrumbarry Weir and back on Saturday 16th November. The race is held in Echuca on the Murray River, as a memorial race for Barrie Beehag. Barrie a founding member of the Moama Water Sports Club, also a life member, sadly passed away from cancer in 2006. The 18th World Water Ski Racing Championships officially. The opening ceremony took competitors and spectators through the volcanic hills of Tenerife on open top buses and the boats in tact with locals filling the streets to show their support. One Hell of a race at the Hi-Tec Oils Hawkesbury 120 Water Ski Race
IT’S GOING TO BE A HELL OF A YEAR ! In ideal Spring like ski racing conditions, the Hellrazor team have won back to back Hi-Tec Oils Hawkesbury 120 ski races in a dominating weekend for the crew. Not only did they win the Sackville Sprint, missing Stinga’s 2009 record of 09.23mins, by just 2 seconds. Team Hell backed it up on the Sunday, with an outright win, 1st in Super Class and once again, they were just seconds off their own 2007 record of 41:08mins. Peter Procter and Jason Walmsley skied hard and showed their river racing dominance will be continuing this season, for others to chase and aspire to. Superman could not emulate their 2009 & 2011 wins and were relegated to 2nd place on both days, towing Daniel Graziano and James Buser. 3rd went to Merc Force in the fast conditions both days too. Daniel Cotton and Kris Knights are teaming up for this season and showed they can keep the others honest behind Don Gulley’s super quick Force boat.
